Abstract

In the reported program several hydrocarbon polymers and paraffins have been treated with gaseous fluorine at selected and carefully controlled conditions in order to obtain fluorocarbon polymers by employing new approach. It is shown that fluorinated polymers and copolymers are structurally similar to the hydrocarbon starting materials and have physical properties similar to known structurally related fluorocarbon polymers obtained by polymerization of fluorocarbon monomers. In this study particular attention is given to polycarbon monofluoride which can be obtained from activated charcoals and carbon black. The material, obtained from fluorination of graphite is the most thermally stable polymeric fluorcarbon material known. It is indefinitely stable to 600 degree C and stable for short periods of time to 800 degree C. A new fluidized bed plasma synthesis for poly(carbon monofluoride) is reported.
