Permanent paralysis caused by epidural hematoma after tunneled catheter placement

Abstract

The risk of neurologic dysfunction from hemorrhagic complications of epidural placement is unknown but may be higher than previously reported. The occurrence and the extent of damage caused by spinal epidural hematoma depend on an amalgam of factors such as patient characteristics, clinical judgment, technical skills of the physician, materials and equipment, patient supervision, and care pathways. Lack of recognition and treatment at an early stage may result in catastrophic outcomes, such as permanent loss of function.
