This issue comprises fifteen papers and twelve short notes, contributions given at the 8th international conference on Frankia and actinorhizal plants, held 2-4 September 1991 at Lyon, France. Many different aspects of nitrogen-fixing symbiosis are covered, including occurrence of Frankia in the soil, the biochemistry, genetics (including genetic transformation) and taxonomy of Frankia, root nodules (including aerial nodulation), plant physiology and biochemistry, growth, tree breeding and genetic diversity of nitrogen fixing trees, and ecological applications of research in the establishment of forest plantations. Tree species covered are Casuarina glauca, C. equisetifolia, C. cunninghamiana, Alnus glutinosa, A. acuminata, A. hirsuta, A. rubra, Myrica gale and Elaeagnus angustifolia. Papers cover work in Réunion, West Africa (Senegal, Gambia), Egypt, France, Italy, USA, China and SE Asia.
