Abstract

Although the exercise of religion in prison is a fundamental freedom, it is regulated in the light of the specific conditions of the prison environment. The French Code of Criminal Procedure, case law and international texts adopted by France provide the legal framework. But the effective implementation of freedom of religion in prisons faces a number of challenges.
