Abstract

Over the past years, more and more comments appeared claiming the United States is on the path to becoming an oligarchy dominated politically by the members of the top 1% of the income distribution. This chapter discusses what oligarchies are, what forms can be distinguished, and whether the United States is actually evolving toward a rule of the rich.
