Abstract

Intelligent transport systems architecture is the framework within which individual telematics services and functions such as traffic monitoring, incident detection and emergency support can be developed. This framework is similar to Britain's three-year project on highways covering the area from Swansea in the west to Gatwick Airport in the east linked by cabling and networking to provide a large-scale test circuit application of two-way communications between traffic and roadside infrastructure. Five initial applications have been selected to demonstrate and exercise the architecture: driver information; variable speed limits and driver assistance; traffic management; coach passenger information; and environmental control.
