Abstract

Sjögren's syndrome and graft-versus-host-disease (GVHD) are autoimmune diseases affecting the salivary glands, as well as many other organ systems. The effects of these disorders on the salivary glands have a profound impact on oral health and functions. Dryness of the mouth (xerostomia) is the most common symptom associated with salivary gland dysfunction. Evaluation methods for xerostomia and salivary gland function are presented. Management of autoimmune salivary gland disorders combines palliative agents, secretagogues, and disease-modifying drugs. © 2007 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
