Abstract

A review with 51 refs. is given on constrained-search, universal, variational functionals in d.-functional theory for obtaining the wave function of a many-electron system, which gives the electron d. and the min. ground-state energy. The topics discussed include: exchange and correlation energies; generalized Kohn-Sham theory; self-consistent orbital equations for non-v-representability; and universal functionals for excited states and mixed-symmetry states.
