This paper aimed to characterize and qualify a secondary standard of diclofenac sodium as a reference standard in the quality control of medicines. The identity of the candidate was confirmed through infrared spectroscopy and the content (99.63%) determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) by comparing with the compendial primary standard. The quality of the secondary standard was also supported by redox titration in non-aqueous media, related substances and UV spectrum by HPLC.
