Abstract

A review is given of solid-state 2H NMR spectroscopy of membranes. Topics discussed include equil. and dynamical properties of membrane lipids studied by solid-state 2H NMR spectroscopy, direct observation of coupling tensors related to mol. structure and dynamics, mol. structures and motions from 2H NMR lineshapes, order parameters related to av. membrane properties, 2H spin-lattice relaxation times that reveal dynamic properties of lipid membranes, model-free anal. that suggests collective membrane motions govern relaxation, spectral densities and correlation functions derived for simplified models in a closed form, and 2H relaxation that allows a detailed comparison of the structural and dynamic properties of membranes
