Within this work we have conducted research and performed simulations on electrophysiological phenomena in the myocardium using a custom-built parallel code using MPI. We have been able to investigate and implement efficient code improvements and refinements leading to good speed-ups as well as to test the performance of the latest Linux based clusters powered by 32 and 64-bit Intel processors. Our work should be thought of as research on and a parallel implementation of a well known numerical approach on large top-of-the-line clusters. We have aimed at and implemented a portable parallel MPI code which will be used as a testbed for testing various partitioning and allocation algorithms. © Springer-Verlag 2004.
