In this paper we describe the embedded handheld system for decision support that is aimed for the area of agriculture and home gardening. Based on the user preferences, environment measurements and knowledge base data, the system recommends the appropriate plant to be grown. The system consists of the wireless, battery powered sensor module and the handheld hardware platform based on the Windows Embedded CE 6.0 operating system platform. The paper describes the system's purpose, functionality and architecture in detail. We conclude that the proposed architecture is also applicable for implementing other expert systems into the embedded handheld computer platforms. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media.
