Abstract

Itch in chronic kidney disease (CKD), classically known as uremic pruritus or renal itch, is one of the most common complications of end-stage renal disease. Itch contributes to the burden of kidney disease and is markedly detrimental to the quality of life of this patient population. The underlying physiology and pathogenesis are discussed, as are current treatments. Rapid progress in understanding the mechanisms that underlie the sensation of itch is leading to new approaches to the therapy.
