The biopsychosocial model of pain emphasizes the reciprocal relationship between biological, psychological and social factors. Whilst it is normal to experience distress in response to pain, this can have a detrimental impact upon functioning, wellbeing and quality of life. Therefore, it is important to include screening for distress and disability in all pain assessment as this has significant implications for delivering effective pain management. Current treatment guidelines recommend combining physical and psychological approaches, as graded exercise and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.
