This chapter describes theories in planning and practice that are applicable to rural development and identifies plans targeted to improve quality of life, create sustainable change and establish improvements in health and well-being in rural communities. Concepts in justice, pluralism, democracy and inclusion are discussed to support the need for equity in rural planning. This chapter lends insight to the Rural Planner on potential ideologies and participatory strategies to consider to create a more progressive and healthy livable space that will result in the provision of benefits, poverty alleviation and the amelioration of health disparities.
