Abstract

After briefly reviewing the nature of designing and the part graphics plays in it, the paper looks at some of the ways in which AI techniques might help designers. It discusses some of the problems people have in arriving at decisions in multivariate cases concluding that, because of its nature, designing is too difficult to do without computer assistance. Some current uses of AI in designing are outlined and the paper ends with a list of items to be noted in devising AI systems for designers. A comprehensive set of references is included.
