Abstract

describe the recent behavior therapy literature devoted to this problem [behavior problems in the mentally retarded] examples are provided of studies that investigate factors correlated with the acquisition, instigation, and maintenance of aggression, as well as studies that report the effectiveness of various behavioral intervention procedures on reducing the rate of occurrence of clinically significant problems of aggression / examples are provided of intervention procedures that are used with persons with mental retardation who vary in age, severity of handicapping conditions, and in the severity levels of aggression and related aberrant behaviors behavioral intervention for reinforcement-motivated aggression / extinction / reinforcement of functionally equivalent behaviors / differential reinforcement and extinction / DRO [differential reinforcement of other behaviors] paired with punishment / reinforcement of incompatible behavior / punishment procedures / behavioral intervention for escape-motivated aggression / proactive behavior management approaches / behavioral treatment approaches / extinction / teaching alternative coping skills / behavioral intervention for aggression of uncertain origin / differential reinforcement of other behaviors / social skills training / self-management training in structured environments / self-management training in open environments (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved).
