Abstract

Diesel engines remain the main source of propulsion on which the marine industry must base its future. The main worry from the shipowner's point of view is the escalating costs of the fuel by which the diesels are run. It was therefore inevitable that diesel engine manufacturers would strive to firstly burn less fuel and secondly burn inferior fuels therefore reducing the operating costs on an overall basis. All engine builders are involved in this kind of research and in this article a detailed description is given of the type of research that is involved to reduce the daily operating costs of ships.
