The last 15 years have witnessed great advances in the analysis of the energy transformations in living organisms. From the vast amount of detailed information which has been amassed, a picture emerges revealing some striking characteristics of the chemical organization of living matter. Although metabolic processes are both diverse and complex, the number of basic components is relatively small.
