Abstract

Stroke is an important childhood disorder affecting hundreds of children and young people around the world every year. Stroke is one of the top causes of death in children and young people; however, more recently this statistic has improved somewhat due to advancements in critical care support. Regardless, half the survivors will have some form of long term impairment. The outcomes in childhood strokes lag well behind adult strokes, as they face unique challenges such as delays in recognition, logistical problems with imaging, a wider differential diagnosis to consider, and a reduced amount of evidence for hyperacute intervention in children.
