Abstract

Software-Defined Networking (SDN) enhances the current networking infrastructure to be more flexible and manageable. The traditional networking infrastructure is heavily reliant on the hardware devices resulted a difficult time controlling the network traffic flow and device configuration. In-band networking telemetry or network monitoring in SDN is focusing on the collection of the information required by the application process, managing the network by interacting with the network infrastructure with a set of application programming interfaces. These application programming interfaces will gather and retrieve the data that the monitoring applications require in order to fulfill their responsibilities by integrating all of the nodes inside the network. The order in which telemetry items are collected must be determined depending on the requests of monitoring applications, and any spatial dependency in the network must be detected. Therefore, the objectives of this paper are two folds: First, to identify the research challenges towards SDN In-band telemetry monitoring. Second, to propose the future research perspectives of the envisioned SDN telemetry monitoring.
