Abstract

Anxiety disorders like separation anxiety disorder, specific phobia, social phobia and generalized anxiety disorder are highly prevalent in children and adolescents. If left untreated, it can interfere with emotional, social, and school functioning. Comorbid disorders such as major depressive episode or multiple anxiety disorders have to be recognized by detailed medical history and individual psychological testing. The main therapeutic interventions consist of cognitive-behavioral therapy, family therapy and pharmacological treatment with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. If treated properly anxiety disorders in children and adolescents have good prognostic outcome. © 2005 Dustri-Verlag Dr. Karl Feistle.
