The EU Soil Thematic Strategy is the new framework of the EU for achieving sustainable soil use in Europe. It is based upon the concept of soil multi-functionality and recognizes the various soil functions relevant for European economy and the environment. These functions are under threat by various soil degradation processes that are severely limiting soil functionality and therefore economic growth. Soils in Europe are recognized as being the result of millennia of human interaction with the landscape. Therefore the new paradigm of anthroscape is highly relevant to Europe and to effective soil protection in Europe. The anthroscape of the Cinque Terre National park is used as an example to demonstrate the potential of this concept as an effective tool for implementing soil protection strategies. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2011.
