Rapidly changing network requirements and traffic growth, call for new deployment architectures and utilization of emerging technologies in higher operational frequencies, such as the E-band. The E3NETWORK project aims at designing an E-band transceiver capable of fulfilling the enhanced backhaul challenges set by future networking. In this paper, the unique characteristics of E-band systems are highlighted. A regulatory overview of the E-band allocations is presented. The main potential applications of E-band technology are investigated. Among others, focus is given to comparative advantages of E-band backhauling against conventional backhaul solutions. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.
