This entry reviews recent metagenomic data on rumen microbial ecology in two different subspecies of reindeer, semidomesticated subarctic reindeer on mainland Norway (Eurasian tundra reindeer, Rangifer tarandus tarandus) and wild reindeer isolated on the high Arctic archipelago of Svalbard (Svalbard reindeer, Rangifer tarandus platyrhynchus).
