Abstract

The Agenda 21, which was adopted at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, resulted in the general concept of 'sustainable development' as a political guideline around the world (UNCED 1992). The protection of nature, its ecological functions and natural resources has a central role in this context, not least because of the regulations of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) (Goodland et al. 1992; Haber 1998a,b; IUCN 1980; McNeely et al. 1990). © 2010 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
