I was born in Samarkand1 to a Jewish family from Uzbekistan: the Katzs. My father was an expert in wine production. He had a diploma from the Imperial Botanical Nikitski Institute in Yalta and had done an internship in France at the beginning of the century. He was 22 years older than my mother, a theater actress.
