Abstract

UK: Quintessence price £148.00; pp 304 ISBN 9781850972167 Reliable immediate implantation or 'teeth in one day' is what many of our patients are demanding. The extraction of teeth can have a very large effect on our patient's quality of life. This textbook covers all aspects of immediate implant placement, immediate loading and tem-porisation. This books takes you from the very basics to the most complex cases including informative chapters on treat-ment planning, case selection, aesthetics, occlusion and the psychological aspects for the patient, to name but a few. Dr Schwartz-Arad is a specialist in maxillofacial surgery from Tel Aviv and has a very impressive background both in academia and in clinical practice. She is joined in the task of writing this book by 22 international leading names in the world of implant dentistry. In the foreword to this book Dr Dennis P. Tar-now describes this as a 'life's work'. It is only through a 'life's work' that such an impressive book can be written for future generations of implant dentists to learn from. The book is split into five sections. These five sections describe the back-ground to immediate implant placement, surgical aspects to placement, aesthetic considerations in treatment planning, clinical scenarios, psychological aspects, complications and complex cases. All these sections are illustrated with hun-dreds of high quality photographs and excellent diagrams, along with CBCT scans and radiographs. I found the step-by-step photography contributed signifi-cantly to my enjoyment of the book. This section on on complex and unusual cases describes immediate implantation following extraction of an impacted maxillary canine, as well as a case of a root fracture where there is a need for an 'emergency' implant place-ment! All of these cases are followed up over a number of years. Of particular note, the author pre-sents many arguments for the immedi-ate placement of implants. Along with ridge preservation, another argument strongly put forward throughout the text is the 'quality of life' effect of immediate implant placement. Schwartz-Arad pre-sents an excellently laid out section on the psychological benefits of immediate implant placement and I was certainly convinced by her arguments. There is something in this book for everyone and thus I would wholeheart-edly recommend Ridge presentation and immediate implantation to any practi-tioner of implant dentistry.
