Abstract

There is scientific evidence that women are more prone to specific injuries than are men, due to differences in hip and knee anatomy and hormonal profiles. Aging women are also susceptible to the “Dowager's Hump,” or kyphosis, and decreased balance. Various factors are responsible for these conditions, including hormones and joint angles. Currently popular exercise programs, yoga and Pilates, have been shown to have some positive impact on these conditions. This chapter explores the nature of these conditions and the impact of yoga and Pilates.
