This article aims to discuss the complex mediations among politics, memory and the writing of history, using Izabel Andrade Marson's recently published book Politics, history and method in Joaquim Nabuco: fabrics of revolution and slavery as reference. Also based on considerations by Maria Stella Bresciani and Carlos Alberto Vesentini, this essay attempts to challenge procedures concerning the art of making history. © 2009 Instituto de Estudos Avançados da Universidade de São Paulo.
