Climate Change, Peacekeeping, and Perspectives for UN Reform

Abstract

Ever since the Club of Rome published its report Limits to Growth (Meadows/Meadows/Randers et al. 1972) the question of the human impact on the global environment and the scarcity of the planet's resources have come to play an ever-increasing role in international politics. In the report, the researchers built a model to investigate five major trends of global concern: accelerating industrialization, rapid population growth, widespread malnutrition, depletion of non-renewable resources, and a deteriorating environment. At the time, this report was given considerable attention, but as its predictions about natural resources did not seem to materialize, the value of the findings began to be questioned.
