Abstract

This chapter discusses the advantages and limitations of imaging systems commonly utilized in patients being evaluated for maxillofacial/craniofacial surgery. No one system can address all the diagnostic challenges a surgeon will encounter. Since the imaging systems under discussion utilize some form of electromagnetic energy, a risk-benefit analysis must be performed before deciding to image any patient. Based on the clinical examination, medical history, and treatment objectives, the surgeon decides what, if any, imaging study is essential for a given patent. This is a professional judgment based on prevailing evidenced-based best practices.
