Abstract

Disability related to mental disorders has attained an unprecedented international prominence. With the publication of the Global Burden of Disease Study, a common metric for comparing the global burden of disparate health conditions was established, and the relative burden of mental disorders was revealed (Murray & Lopez, 1996). The Global Burden of Disease Study startled the international health community by finding that neuropsychiatric disorders as a group were the third leading cause of lost healthy years of life, and the foremost cause of disability. © 2005 Springer-Verlag US.
