DNA-DNA hybridization yields data that can be used to delineate phylogenetic clusters and to determine the branching pattern of a phylogenetic system in terms of relative time. To convert relative time to absolute time it is necessary to calibrate the DNA hybridization measurements against fossil evidence of divergence dates, or against dated geological events which caused phyletic dichotomies between the ancestors of living taxa.-from Authors
