Abstract

Erwinias cause damage to potatoes in warm and temperate climates. Blackleg-induced symptoms vary from wet rots to dry stem necroses, depending on climatic conditions. Soft rot on tubers can develop either in field or in storage. The revised nomenclature distinguishes the involved pathogens now classified in two genera: Pectobacterium and Dickeya. Plant and tuber contaminations occur from various inoculum sources (tubers, soil, rhizospheres, dumps, volunteers) under various biotic and abiotic factors. Application of prophylactic measures allows the disease incidence to be reduced.
