Abstract

Academic surgical departments are required to perform three key roles; provision of highly specialized clinical care, high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate education to create the next generation of surgeons and delivery of excellent, innovative research. To ensure that these commitments are delivered requires clinical and academic excellence, clinical engagement and high-quality leadership. In this chapter, we outline the traditional and current models of leadership, and their application to the surgical environment. We also assess the relationship between management and leadership and strategies for leadership development. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2010.
