In this chapter we examine several aspects of gender identity disorder (GID) in an attempt to provide a framework for the current controversy regarding reform. We begin by situating the diagnosis in a historical context and providing the current diagnostic criteria. Following this, we explore the prevalence rates and concerns regarding accurate assessment and research with individuals who exhibit symptoms associated with GID. We then provide a review of the etiological explanations of GID and corresponding treatment recommendations. Finally, we outline the current controversies about the diagnosis and end with potential recommendations for future research. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved)
