Abstract

A detailed discussion of characteristics of rare earth element doped phosphors is presented via a discussion of the f-f, d-f, and charge-transfer electronic transitions associated with rare earth ions. This chapter explains how the Dieke diagram is used to characterize these transitions, and uses the phosphors Y2O3:Eu3+ and YAG:Ce3+ as specific examples of important phosphors.
