The formation of molecular clouds in spiral galaxies

Abstract

We investigate, through numerical hydrodynamical calculations, the behaviour of a galactic disk subject to an external spiral potential. In particular, we focus on the evolution of inter-arm structure such as spurs, the formation of molecular clouds, and the generation of velocity dispersion as gas passes through the spiral arms.
