Abstract

The mol. structures of a series of satd. org. compds. (I) (cyclohexane derivs., normal hexoses, polysaccharides, ortho esters of sugars contg. pyranose rings, acetyl glycosyl halides, and halogenoses of the pentose, hexose, and heptose series) are discussed in the light of stereochem. information obtained by electron diffraction studies. The importance of considering the interaction of atoms that are not directly linked is pointed out. Starting with results previously obtained in the case of halogenated ethanes and some 6-membered ring systems, the structures of I are discussed in some detail. The mechanisms of certain reactions which do not involve the opening of the pyranose ring are discussed with relation to the nonplanarity of the pyranose ring. [on SciFinder(R)]
