Abstract

The objective of this study is to propose a method of parametric reverse modeling and redesign for prismatic shapes. The main structural feature levels for the parametric feature extraction were divided firstly to distinguish core issues from the operation process. Three basic steps towards successful reverse engineering prismatic shapes were put forward, which include strategy analysis of parametric reverse modeling, extraction of sectional curves and reconstruction of feature models, and parametric redesign of prismatic shapes. In this study, a sample part was reverse modeled and redesigned to demonstrate the proposed method. This process proved an efficient way towards parametric reverse modeling and innovative redesign method of prismatic shapes. © 2012 Springer-Verlag GmbH.
