Abstract

An understanding of congenital syphilis and why it has become a public health problem worldwide, reveals the prevention, treatment and complications that syphilis can present during pregnancy is necessary for greater health effectiveness. To objective identify clarifications about the treatment of syphilis, as well as complications caused to the mother and to reach through the contamination during the gestational period. Methodology this is a cross-sectional, exploratory, qualitative study of bibliographic review. The study was carried out in the national journals, published between 2013 and the first half of 2017. It is noted that over the years, the number of reports of non-Brazilian deaths of children up to one year of age due to complications caused by illness, has increased alarmingly, showing a clear failure to combat the disease, lack of education in health of the carriers of the bacteria, a serious problem for the treatment, and it is in detriment to the world public health. There is an urgency through enlightening campaigns about a disease, emphasizing clearly as consequences resulting from the disease, as well as its lack of treatment or inadequate treatment during the gestational period, stressing that it can lead to premature death of the fetus, or causing many sequels in their survivors. The best way to prevent congenital syphilis is to perform prenatal care correctly, the active search, whenever possible, by the mother who neglects prenatal care in order to avoid future harm to the health of the newborn and his or her parents.
