Since their beginning, human societies and their ecosystems have been inter-dependent. While the early hunting-gathering way of life relied on the provisioning of wild animals and plants, with the emergence of agriculture and permanent settlements humans began to actively shape the land surface of the Earth in order to produce biomass for food, materials and energy conversion.
