Abstract

In geoservices, coverages denote space-time varying extended phenomena. Examples include sensor observation time series, raster images (like hyperspectral satellite imagery), and climate and ocean data. Coverage properties include both topological (e.g., neighborhood) and geometrical (e.g., resolution) elements. Obviously, it is paramount for open geoservices to have a well-defined coverage data model which can lead to a more efficient processing of spatial queries. The representation model proposed here is based on the cw-complex notion and adds a geometrical realization to each topological primitive in the cw-complex. This model can capture structured coverages such as raster grids and unstructured coverages such as triangulated irregular networks (TINs). Also, this model provides a conceptual model for manipulating coverages in scientific database systems. © 2010 Springer-Verlag.
