Abstract

Purpose of the assignment In this first data-analytic homework assignment of the semester, you and your partner will analyze data on a sample of library books checked out by 2 nd and 3 rd grade students in a school district in the US. These data are a subset of the data used in Joe's dissertation, so don't try to publish off of them until he graduates and tries publishing his own article. That would be super tacky, and he didn't give you the full dataset so you'll just look silly when he challenges you. Each record in the dataset (HW 01 – Checkout.dta) represents a single checkout from the school library. The dataset contains variables on student gender, grade 1 , and race, the gender of the main character in the book checked out, the race of the main character in the book checked out, and whether the book checked out is fiction or non-fiction. The dataset also includes (anonymized) student identifiers, and book titles. You will not need all of these variables to complete your analyses, but you may find it interesting to use them to conduct other analyses. During your analyses, you will be asked to use the data to address the following research question:
