Abstract

Results of an investigation are presented in which differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) has been used to investigate addition and condensation polymerizations in bulk, solution, and emulsion systems. Both isothermal and temperature scanning modes have been employed. The authors have demonstrated the utility of DSC in studying the kinetics of light initiated free radical polymerizations. Lauryl acrylate, 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate and trimethylolpropane triacrylate were the monomers examined in the initial experiments, and Trigonal 14 was the principal initiator used. This technique provides a direct, quantitative measure of the conversion of monomer to polymer.
