Abstract

Because of its highly addictive nature and ready availability, tobacco is probably the most abused drug in our society today. Despite aggressive antismoking campaigns that have resulted in the passage of laws in many states banning smoking in public places, monumental fines against the tobacco companies, and dramatic increases in taxation, abuse of tobacco remains the primary preventable cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States [1].
