This study investigated the working partnerships of librarians and academics in their efforts to develop students' information literacy at the University of Waikato, Hamilton, New Zealand. The study found that the effectiveness of information literacy programs depends on the teaching partners having a shared understanding of how information literacy is developed, and the provision of appropriate staffing resources to develop and deliver the programs. Effective communication and positive working relationships are some conditions that were found to be essential to the success of collaborative teaching partnerships, and strategies were identified for initiating, developing and sustaining those partnerships. © 2003, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
