Abstract

(from the chapter) Assessed the individual achievement goals among students in China to explore the universal applicability of the motivational constructs proposed in the West. Specifically, the authors studied the goal and motivation system of Chinese students from the 3 main facets: The generalizability of Pattern of Adaptive Learning (PAL) developed in the US by C. Midgly et al (1993) among the Chinese students, to see if motivational constructs proposed in the West are applicable for the Chinese students including the gifted students; age changes in patterns of adaptive learning; and gender differences in motivational patterns. The work consisted of 3 successive studies (K. Shi et al, 1994; W. Wang et al, 1995; and P. Wang et al, 1996) which are described in this chapter.
