Abstract

R. W. Brockett is the father of feedback linearization, an important technique for the control of nonlinear systems. He is primarily responsible for recognizing this and fostering its developement. Feedback linearization has also strongly influenced the subsequent development of nonlinear systems theory. It has motivated many later trends in the field as we shall discuss below.
